Visit the library or buy a second hand book on classifying trees, plants, birds, insects, butterflies or flowers.

Pack a picnic and go with an parent/carer for a trip to the local forest or park and find and classify as many plants or creatures as you can.

You can choose to just focus on flowers or you can dip in and out of everything that your book can help you to identify. Of course you can use an online resource too – we just think it might be nice to be a bit “old school” and keep your phone in your pocket while you are out exploring!

Stay with your adult and keep safe at all times but have a really fun day.

As long as you include the titles of what you think you found , you can choose how you record your results – a photo of each, a sketch and a description or you might even pick some leaves (as long as it isn’t an endangered or dangerous plant) and press them. Let your adult help you to make the right decisions and then get creative with displaying your findings!

Don’t forget to include the total number of classifications that you made!

include a short evaluation (written or recorded on video) your day in nature and any difficulties you encountered along the way and how you overcame them.

This competition is open to any child ages 4 – 16 who is home educated and living in the UK. The deadline for this competition is 12 o’clock midnight on the last day of each calendar month. The winners will be announced within one week of the deadline via social media and winners will be contacted by email.
