GCSEs & EXAMS

Are your GCSE Courses 1 or 2 years?

Some of our courses are 1 year and some are 2 years with some having the option of either. You can find out more about the specification and course duration here.

How do we book exams?

The exams will need to be booked by yourself through an exam centre. There maybe some local to you, but we are partners with Tutors and Exams that are nationwide so they may have one not too far away from you too. You would get a discount code from us to use with them. I would check what the exam centre offers before signing up to classes with us as it is important that they can facilitate the exam. The exam codes / specifications we offer can be found here.

Do you offer exam paper marking?

Yes we offer marking/grading of GCSE/IGCSE papers in the shop section of our main website.
This service includes marking and feedback of a specific exam paper that we have downloaded from the exam board website. Marks are given per question and general feedback is given for each section of the paper.

What specifications do you follow for which subjects?

How do you cover practical elements of the science exam?

There’s no separate practical exam or coursework in the Edexcel IGCSE Double Science. The practical elements are assessed through the written papers. This means that students don’t need to physically do the experiments themselves, but they do need to understand how they’re carried out, what equipment is used, and how to interpret the results. The exam includes questions on key practicals like testing for gases, food tests, chemical reactions, and methods like separation or neutralisation, and we cover all of these during the course. Our students get confident with this side of things by working through diagrams, watching video walk-throughs, and practising exam-style questions. So there’s no disadvantage at all when it comes to sitting the exams.

Do you teach IGCSEs or GCSEs?

We mainly teach IGCSE’s as they don’t include the practical elements of GCSEs such as coursework, speaking and listening and practical exams as these are often more tricky to organise as home educators. We teach some GCSE’s such as Maths, Psychology and Sociology as these don’t have a practical element. find out more.

What is the difference between Maths GCSE vs Maths IGCSE?

The foundation GCSE mathematics specification is a popular course and is the one that would be done in schools. The GCSE specification has 3 written papers: 1 non-calculator and 2 calculator papers. Furthermore, students can sit the exam in May/June (and resits are available the following November). The foundation IGCSE mathematics course provides an interesting alternative for home-educated students. Unlike the GCSE, there are 2 calculator papers and students are provided with a formula sheet. Furthermore, students can take the exam in November or May/June. Whilst the content is very similar to the GCSE specification, there are a few differences in the courses. Here is a link to both specifications below if you want to look at in more detail too.

Do you mark work?

We don’t expect students to submit pre-GCSE work for marking. What happens instead is that the teacher models how to mark the work and chooses from volunteers work to do this on each week and parents also have a responsibility to look over their child’s work. The children share their work during the class and the teacher gives verbal praise and constructive feedback but some teachers do reply to messages and work sent in from time to time. For maths and some other yes / no answers an answer sheet is provided for marking at home.

At GCSE there will be up to 90 minutes of extra work to do each week which is provided by the teacher. In Maths, the teacher provides the answers for self-marking and asks you to send her a message via the website telling her the mark and also any problem areas so that she can cover them in a future lesson. Other teachers will ask for work to be sent in to be marked some weeks and offer individual or group feedback.

I want both my children to go so do I need to buy two courses?

For all of our classes except our smaller classes, your membership is per family, not child so both of your children can attend without you needing to pay again.  They can access the course on the same device or on different devices, depending on what works best for them. For our smaller classes which are mainly GCSE and Tribe you need to purchase per student.
